There are disadvantages to slate.  The costs associated with slate are increased.  The materials themselves and the labor to install make this a more expensive roof.  When you consider the fact that you may only have to replace your roof once in your life makes this a very appealing option.  Plus the fact that it boosts your home's curb appeal and value.
